we are one sick society..anyone who is slightly different...is often times scorned...and well treated differently...

I don't think that makes people sick. There is a design and order to the universe that we acknowledge when we look at others. Those with more symmetrical faces are gazed upon with approval, in many instances from those with asymetrical faces.

I would say one test to consider is whom inspires us. If we are only inspired by young people, then we have a problem.

youth oriented too...


im a photographer.... casual..hobby kind... and old people....are my fav subject right now...

Basically, if one is only attracted to youth and symmetry, then they are a fool and shouldn't be bothered with.

Perhaps it's just as the important for the person who might desire cosmetic surgery to at least make an effort to be a useful and creative person even as they contemplate physical enhancement.

One should have a ying with their tang.

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on the question I posed - maybes that's why I posed it.

I agree that society should just accept people as they are but then as I don't have any hang ups(real or imagined) about the way I look I guess I can't even begin to imagine how some one with a facial disfigurement must feel.

I was watching a program about 'corrective' surgery the other day. On this program were people who had been born with conditions which have an affect on the way they look(eg cherubism(?)) people who had looked 'normal' then developed some sort of condition later on and people who had been in accidents which had resulted in some sort of facial disfigurement. There was also a surgeon giving his opinion on the program. These people had opposing views on the whole debate and I couldn't decide where I stood on it.

Taking the 'disabilty' for one second though I did hear of parents(unrelated to that program) who decided to get their childs nose 'fixed' and something done to the childs eyes - the child was born with Downs Syndrome and they wanted their child to look more 'normal'. I remember feeling sickened at that decision but I'm not not entirely unbiased when it comes to issues to do with anyone born with Downs.

I do share the conscensus that if people start to think it's the norm to get 'corrective' surgery purely for cosmetic reasons then a whole section ('disabled')of society are in danger of then being 'wrote off' as inferior for looking slightly 'differnt'.

People should be accepted as 'people' first but in the cruel society we live in it's not always the case. I'm not one of those people deemed to look 'different' so who am I to judge whether they are or are not justified in getting cosmetic surgery to look more 'normal'(societies word not mine). People shouldn't be made to feel like they have to get that surgery to be accepted but where exactly do we start to change 'ignorant' peoples attitude?????

I hate the society we live in, the one that only focuses on the asthetic qualities people posses, the one that rarely recognises true inner beauty ...
